Great Places to Ride in Colorado

Sedalia to Monument
From Denver take I-25 south to the C470 west exit. Take C470 to Santa Fe (Rt. 85) exit. Go south on 85 to the town of Sedalia. At the light turn right (west) and go to the bridge. After the bridge turn left (south) onto Rt. 105. Ride this road until you reach a fork. Take the right turn of the fork and continue on Rt. 105 until you reach a stop sign and the town of Palmer Lake. Turn right (west) and ride though town obeying the posted speed limits. The next town you reach is Monument. At this point you have a choice to go straight through the intersection where Rt. 105 meets I-25 and continue on I-25 south to Colorado Springs or turn left (east) and start another beautiful ride to Black Forest.
San Juan Skyway
Travel the "road to the sky" that offers views ranging from the towering 14,000-foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains to rolling hillsides speckled with ancient Indian pueblo ruins. Browse through the Victorian towns of Durango, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride and visit famous Mesa Verde National Park. Soak in historic Hot Springs, ride the narrow-gauge railroad, and sleep under the stars or in one of the area's cozy lodges. Winter offers opportunities for skiing, snowmobiling and viewing spectacular scenery.
From Durango, head north on US 550 past Hermosa, Silverton, and Ouray. At Highway 62 near Ridgway, go left and follow Highway 62 to Placerville. Once you reach Placerville, take Highway 145 to the southeast. Continue on 145 until you come to the junction with US 160 near Cortez. Follow US 160 back to Durango to complete the entire loop.
Mount Evans Scenic Byway
This is the highest paved road in North America, climbing more than 7,000 feet in just 28 miles and finally reaching an altitude of 14,270 feet. The Front Range sprawls below along with 100 miles of Rocky Mountain peaks.

From Denver, take I-70 west, and take Exit 240. Travel south and follow Hwy 103 to Echo Lake. At Echo Lake is the Forest Service's check-in station. From here, the road runs to the summit of Mt. Evans.
Top of the Rockies
With altitudes seldom dipping below 9,000 feet, this byway is worthy of its name. It crosses the 10,424-foot Tennessee Pass enroute to the historic mining town of Leadville, the highest incorporated community in the U.S. Old mining camps attest to the state's rich mining heritage. The route crosses the Continental Divide twice and traces the Arkansas River nearly to its source in the vicinity of Fremont Pass. The byway provides access to one of the largest concentrations of Congressionally designated Rare II Wilderness in the nation.

From Denver travel west on Interstate 70 to the Copper Mountain exit at the intersection of -70 and State Highway 91 (Milepost 195). Exit at Copper Mountain and travel south on State Highway 91, the Top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway.

The Byway travels on State Hwy 91 south from Copper Mountain to the town of Leadville. From Leadville, travel south on US 24 and turn west on State Hwy 82 (Independence Pass Road). This road takes you to Twin Lakes. From Twin Lakes, travel back to Leadville, and continue on US 24 north to Minturn.
Colorado Peak to Peak Highway
This route provides a spectacular, close-up view of the Continental Divide. Attractions along the way include Rocky Mountain National Park, Golden Gate Canyon State Park, and the Black Hawk/Central City gaming district. Established in 1918, Peak to Peak is Colorado's oldest scenic byway. Its attractions and popularity have justified Peak to Peak Magazine's comment, "many call it one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the country."

From Interstate 70, take exit 244 onto northbound Highway 119. The byway begins in Black Hawk and continues along Highways 119, 72, and 7 ending in Estes Park.

From Highway 34 or Highway 36 at Estes Park, take the junction for Southbound Highway 7. The byway continues along Highways 7, 72, and 119 to Black Hawk.
Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway
The Gold Belt Tour follows historic railroad and stagecoach routes leading you to North America's greatest gold camp, three world-class fossil sites, and numerous historic sites. The Shelf and Phantom Canyon Roads offer adventurous driving experiences along unpaved routes through winding canyons. Paved roads lead to high mountain ranges. Travel along Teller 1 and gaze at majestic Pikes Peak. Five byway communities allow a glimpse into this area's mining heritage.

The Gold Belt Tour Scenic and Historic Byway is located just southwest of Colorado Springs, CO. To access the Byway, take State Highway 115 from Colorado Springs to US Highway 50 and go west to Caņon City. You can also take US Highway 24 from Colorado Springs to Florissant.

There are several different Byway routes:
  • The Phantom Canyon Road goes from Florence to Victor, a route that travels through grassland, canyon, and mountain country for 34 miles between these two historic towns. Several miles of the Phantom Canyon Road are gravel, narrow, and winding, and no vehicles over 25 feet in length are allowed.
  • Shelf Road is 26 miles in length from Caņon City to Cripple Creek. Shelf Road travels through farmlands and grass plains and up into a steep canyon where the road gets its unique name from a section simply called "The Shelf." The Shelf is a section of Shelf Road that hugs a canyon wall high above Fourmile Creek. Travelers have been experiencing The Shelf since the late 1800s. Also, several miles of the road are gravel, narrow, and winding.
  • The High Park Road segment connects Florence and Caņon City with Teller Road 1 and Teller Road 11. High Park Road travels through mountains, grasslands, and plateaus. It is completely paved with no vehicle restrictions.
  • Teller Country Road 1 goes 20 miles from Cripple Creek to Florissant. This road is paved.
  • The road from Cripple Creek to Victor (Highway 67) now includes a new segment that detours the old mining road. The segment includes a new bridge over Arequa Gulch with a scenic pull-out.
